Tenerife without a car · base in El Tanque, local buses
Yes you can. Three walking trails from the door, direct bus to Garachico, shared taxi to Santa Cruz. The island at a slower pace.
Tenerife without a car has a bad reputation, but that’s false in the rural north. In the south you’re right (resorts dispersed, bad connections, Uber-dependent). In the north, El Tanque sits on the best TITSA bus axis Buenavista-Icod-La Orotava-Santa Cruz, and the 363 line connects directly to Garachico every hour.
This guide is for those who want slow travel without the friction of renting, parking and driving on twisty roads.
The key question: what trip are you doing?
If you’re coming 7+ nights to disconnect
Clear recommendation: no car. You save €200-400 on rental, no parking on narrow streets, no after-dinner driving on curves, and the village’s natural rhythm will suit you. The daily walk to the supermarket becomes part of the rest.
If you’re coming 3-5 nights wanting to see “all of Tenerife”
You need a car. The island is 80 × 50 km with hard topography, and Teide National Park is only accessible by car or tour. Carless you’ll only see the north — a real limit for a first-timer.
If you’re coming 7+ nights and want a mix
Carless + 2 rental days. Rent in Icod (Hertz, Cicar) or Garachico (Plus Car) for €35-50/day, use it 2 days for Teide and Anaga, walk and bus the rest. Ideal.

| 363 | El Tanque ⇄ Garachico ⇄ Buenavista | Every 60-90 min, last ~9 pm | €1.55 |
| 108 | El Tanque ⇄ Santa Cruz via Icod/Orotava/Laguna | Every 60 min, last ~10 pm | €7-8 |
| 102 | Garachico ⇄ La Laguna ⇄ North Airport | Every 30 min day, 60 min night | €8 |
| 107 | Icod ⇄ Puerto de la Cruz | Every 30 min | €3 |
Download the TITSA or Tenmás app — the Tenmás card saves you 50 % vs cash on bus. Buy it at tobacconists or large supermarkets.
What does NOT connect well
- Teide National Park: only line 348 (1 trip/day from Puerto de la Cruz, up at 11 am, down at 4 pm). For more flexibility you need a car or organised tour.
- Anaga: line 273 from La Laguna, but complicated connections. Carless, an organised day tour from La Orotava or La Laguna is best.
- Masca / Teno: very poorly connected by TITSA. Organised tour.
7-day carless plan from El Tanque

Total transport: ~€40-50/person across a week. Versus €250-400 for rental + petrol + parking.
Alternative mobility
E-bike
Rental in Icod: Bici Norte, €25/day with helmet and extra battery. Lets you do Garachico round trip (12 km, 600 m cumulative elevation gain), reach Garachico harbour, climb to La Tabaiba. The Garachico-El Tanque gradient is considerable (700 m in 6 km) — electric assist is essential.
E-scooter
Plus Car Garachico: scooter €35-45/day with helmet. 80-100 km range is enough for full-day Garachico-Icod-La Orotava excursions. Requirement: valid car or motorbike licence + scooter experience (the road curves are sharp).
Shared taxi
For full-day excursions to Teide, Masca or Anaga, a 4-person shared taxi costs €80-120/car day. In a group, cheaper than renting a small car with full insurance.
Our trusted El Tanque taxi driver — we put you in touch if you ask. Fixed prices, no surprises, knows all the hidden viewpoints.
The detail nobody says
Without a car, your action radius shrinks and that changes your experience. Instead of “let’s see 17 sites in 5 days” it becomes “I know this village in depth”. You dine twice at the same restaurant and the waiter recognises you. You walk the same square at night and notice the seasonal changes. You learn the baker’s name.
That doesn’t sell as a holiday, but it’s what many guests remember years later. The island at a more human rhythm.

Preguntas frecuentes
FAQ
Can I really visit Tenerife without renting a car?
Yes, with two conditions: 1) pick well-connected lodging (El Tanque has bus 363 direct to Garachico and Buenavista, and 108 to Santa Cruz via Icod, La Orotava, La Laguna); 2) accept a slower pace. If you want to see the whole island in 5 days, you need a car. If you're coming for 1 week to the north and want slow travel, carless is viable and pleasant.
How do I get to the airport without a car?
Tenerife North (TFN) is 50 min: bus 102 direct Garachico → La Laguna → airport (~75 min, €8). Tenerife South (TFS): more complicated, combine 108 → 343, total ~2 h 30. Alternative: shared taxi €60/car from Casa La Paredita to the south airport (fixed price, up to 4 people). Better to fly into TFN if possible.
What can I do on foot from the house?
Lomo Molino viewpoint (3 min), La Vica trail (1.5 h loop), Millennial Dragon Tree of Garachico (1 h walking), descent to Garachico harbour (half day, 9 km, all downhill). In the El Tanque centre itself there's supermarket, bakery, pharmacy, plaza with café and Pizzería La Albahaca — all 5 min walking.
Is there Uber/Cabify in north Tenerife?
Uber yes, reaches most of the island with less availability in the rural north than the south. Cabify less. Traditional taxis always — 2 ranks in El Tanque (3 min) and 4-5 in Garachico. WhatsApp the number we give you on arrival to book trips.
E-bike or e-scooter as alternative?
El Tanque is at 760 m altitude — going down is easy, coming back is serious exercise. E-bikes work very well, rented in Icod (€3 hour, €25 day, full battery does Garachico round trip). E-scooter in Garachico from €35 day with helmet — worth it to extend range without a conventional car.
